How can a web page hijack your AI?
Hidden words can steer your AI. Keep what you can't undo behind your yes.
Just a summary, please
You asked your AI to sum up a supplier's web page.

How a page takes over
In three steps:
- A page hides words.
- Your AI reads them as orders.
- Your gate stops it.

Hidden where you won't look
White text, tiny print, a comment. You see nothing. Your AI can still read it.

One stream of words
Your words and the page's arrive as one stream. A hidden order can pass as yours. That's prompt injection.

Your gate: it asks first
Set it to ask before it sends, shares, pays or deletes. A typed rule isn't a lock.

A rule typed into the chat is not a gate. The UK's NCSC (Aug 2026): “do not rely on prompting alone”.
Claude
Anthropic calls it prompt injection. In the Claude app, Claude asks before it acts by default.
The mode selector in the chat box. Claude in Chrome's side panel starts on Automatically approve. Anthropic: switch to Manual when mistakes would be hard to undo.
Set each tool that sends or deletes to Needs approval. It asks in Manual mode; in Auto, Claude decides.
Only sites you trust
Anthropic calls web content “a primary vector for prompt injection attacks”.
Claude asks before it permanently deletes files, in any mode. Claude for Word: Anthropic says to use it only with trusted documents.
ChatGPT
OpenAI calls it prompt injection. Its cloud browser is designed to ask before hard-to-reverse actions.
Settings, Plugins, Permissions. Allow read actions still asks before any change.
Not on Free or Go. Keep Always ask: OpenAI calls Always allow “not recommended”.
For sensitive data. It cuts the risk of data leaking out, but does not stop every injection.
OpenAI says its safeguards “do not eliminate every risk”, so review sensitive steps and important results.
Gemini
Google calls it prompt injection: instructions “hidden from you but visible to the AI agent”.
It asks first
Before it sends, changes your data, buys or submits a form.
Writes need your yes
Custom apps (in the US, personal accounts): Gemini currently “requires manual confirmation for any write actions”.
Stop a task that goes somewhere you did not ask.
Task: personal accounts on Google AI Pro or Ultra, not in the EEA, Nigeria, Switzerland or the UK. Google: its safeguards “aren't intended to replace your active supervision”.
Quick check · three questionsDid it stick?
1You ask your AI to sum up a supplier's page. One line on it is white on white. What can your AI do with that line?
The answer: B Hidden text is still text. Google warns of instructions hidden from you but visible to the AI agent. No break-in or stolen password is needed.2Why can a hidden line on a page pass for your request?
The answer: C The UK's National Cyber Security Centre: inside the model there is no distinction between data and instructions. Anthropic says Claude may take hidden instructions as requests from you.3You must handle a web page you don't know. Which job is the safer one to hand over?
The answer: A With no apps that act, a hidden line has far less it can do. It can still tilt the summary, so check what matters at its source.

- Anthropic, Use Claude for Word (only with trusted documents; instructions hidden in text, comments, tracked changes, headers and footers; confirm before risky operations)
- Anthropic, Use Claude Cowork safely (the two conditions of an attack; untrusted content scanned and likely injections flagged; the chances of an attack still non-zero; web content a primary vector; sites you trust; Manually approve when mistakes are hard to undo; always asks before permanent deletion; monitor tasks)
- Anthropic, Use Claude in Chrome safely (an email that might contain invisible text instructing Claude; Claude may interpret hidden instructions as legitimate requests from you; the chances of an attack still non-zero)
- Anthropic, Claude in Chrome permissions guide (the mode drop-down on the chat input; Automatically approve the default in the Cowork side panel)
- Anthropic, Get started with Claude in Chrome (the side panel starts in Automatically approve mode)
- Anthropic, Get started with Claude Cowork (Manually approve, Automatically approve, Skip all approvals; the mode selector in the chat box; Needs approval asks in Manual, Claude decides in Auto)
