Teach your AI the job once.

A skill is a short set of written steps your AI assistant keeps and uses whenever that job comes up. One file now works in Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini. Mine are made for real office work, dated, free to download, and each one ends with what you must check yourself.

CLAUDE CHATGPT GEMINI SKILL.md
One file, three assistants
Current, as of 16 Oct 2026

Every skill is free and carries its date. Every product fact on this page was checked that day on the vendors' own help pages, for Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini.

What a skill is

A job, written down once.

In plain words, as of October 2026.

01

One small file

A skill is a folder with one written file in it, called SKILL.md. It holds a name, a line on when to use it, and the steps for one job, such as checking a draft against its sources.

02

Used when the job comes up

Your assistant reads only that short line until your request fits it, then loads the full steps. So the job is done the same careful way each time, without pasting a long prompt.

03

One format, three assistants

The format began at Anthropic and is now an open standard. Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini all accept the same SKILL.md file. Where your plan has no skills yet, paste a plain-text copy into a project or a chat instead.

Skill or connector

A skill teaches your AI how to do a task. A connector gives it access to another app, such as your email, calendar or files, signed in as you. MCP is the shared standard those connectors are built on, like one shape of plug that fits many ports. You often want both, but every skill here works on what you paste or attach, with no connector at all. The free lesson on connectors and MCP

Why not a GPT or a Gem

Both are on the way out. OpenAI plans to retire custom GPTs, with a move to plugins. Google is moving Gems to skills, from Nov 2026 for personal accounts and in 2027 for work and school accounts. So skills are what I teach and build now.

All six, free

Built for the work you already do.

Download any of them free, with nothing to sign up for. Each one drafts and never sends, says which tool, mode and model to run it in, and ends with what a person must check.

Not sure which AI to use

Start with Pick the right AI tool. Describe a piece of work and it says where to do it (Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini), which mode and which model, then gives the steps from start to end. It starts from my recommendation, Claude first, ChatGPT second, Gemini third, and says plainly when another tool is the better fit. See the skill

Pick the right AI tool

Tells you where to do a piece of work: Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini, which mode (chat, an agent that does the task, or code), which model, and what to set up first, then gives the steps from start to end. It starts from my recommendation (Claude first, ChatGPT second, Gemini third), says plainly when another tool is the better fit, follows your company's rules, and explains projects, connectors and MCP in plain words.

ForAnyone at work with more than one AI tool, or choosing one: office staff, team leads, managers, and the person everyone asks which AI to use.

What you check
  • Your company's rules. The pick must be a tool your company allows for that data. The skill follows any rule you tell it, but it cannot know rules you do not mention.

  • Approvals. For any agent or connector, keep "ask before acting" on, and type passwords into the website yourself, never into the chat.
  • The result. Check what the tool makes against its sources before you share it.

Check a draft against its sources

Checks every claim in a draft, AI-made or not, against the sources you supply. Each claim is marked supported (with the line it rests on), partly supported, contradicted or not in the sources, with a suggested fix. Then it lists the names, numbers, dates and quotes to check by hand, and gives a one-line verdict: fix first, needs more sources, or ready to send.

ForAnyone who sends AI-assisted writing: managers, analysts, communications teams, salespeople and assistants.

Brief an AI agent

Turns a short, vague request into a six-part brief an AI agent can act on: the goal, what done looks like, the sources it may use, what it may and must not touch, when to stop and ask, and how you will check it. Draft only, ask before sending, never delete. It writes the brief; it does not do the task.

What you check
  • The "must not touch" part matches your team's real rules and data. Add anything the skill could not know.
  • Set the approval setting in your agent tool yourself, so it asks before it acts. The brief cannot change that setting, and each tool offers options such as "Always allow" or "Allow all actions". The section above says where the setting is in each tool, as of Oct 2026.
  • No password, customer record or private detail went into the brief. The skill leaves these out if you paste them, and tells you, but check.
  • Check the agent's work against the "how I will check it" part before you rely on it or send anything.

One-page decision brief

Turns your notes, options, quotes and emails into a one-page brief that asks a decision-maker for a clear yes. Budget against actual, in plain words

Reads a spreadsheet export or a pasted table of budget and actual figures, works out the difference and percentage for every line, flags the lines over your threshold and the data problems it finds, and drafts a 150 to 250 word summary for a manager or board, with the working for every number and only the reasons you give it.

Free, and yours to use

Free to use. Free to share.

Every skill on this page comes under the same free licence, Version 2 of 16 Oct 2026, with nothing to pay and nothing to sign up for. The full terms are in LICENSE.txt, inside each download.

USE IT

As much as you like

At work or at home, in any organisation, in Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini.

CHANGE IT

To fit your team

Edit a skill to your own rules. Hand the changed version to people in your own organisation, team, class or group, with the credit, the date and a line saying it was changed.

SHARE IT

Unchanged, with the credit

Give unchanged copies to anyone, free of charge, or post a link. Keep the credit and the date on them.

NOT FOR SALE

No selling

Do not sell it, charge for access to it or put it inside something you sell. Keep a changed version inside your own group, and never remove the credit or the date.

Why the date stays on

It tells the next reader how old the facts are, and AI tools change every month.

Not advice

Each skill is free and given as it is. It is not legal, HR, financial or other professional advice, and it does not promise any result.

How installing works

Download, add it, ask.

The menus below are each vendor's own, as of 16 Oct 2026. They move often, so if one differs, the vendor's help page wins. If you cannot see a menu, the usual reasons are a rollout still in progress, your plan, your country or an admin setting.

1

Download one skill

Each skill is one small .zip with its SKILL.md inside, free, with nothing to sign up for. For Claude, upload the .zip as it is. For ChatGPT and Gemini, use the SKILL.md file, which each card also offers on its own.

2

Add it to your assistant

Use the tool your company approves for work data. The rows below say where each one keeps its skills, and who can use them.

3

Ask in plain words

For example: "Check this draft against these sources." The assistant uses the skill when your request fits it.

Each skill's card has these steps for that skill, and its setup guide has them in full, with the project route for plans without skills. Anthropic does not review skills made by other people, so read any skill's file before you turn it on, mine included.

What you always check

A skill drafts. You decide.

Each skill ends with its own checks. These four apply to every one.

1

Read the skill first

A skill is instructions to your AI, so read it before you add it, mine included. Skills from other people are not reviewed by Anthropic, and a skill is only as safe as what it tells your AI to do.

2

Names, numbers, dates, quotes

Check them against the original, by hand. A skill marks what it could not find, but it cannot tell you whether your source is right.

3

Keep private data out

Follow your organisation's AI rules on which tool may see which files, and use your work account for work data. Leave out salaries, health details and customer records the job does not need.

4

You press send

Approval settings live in your tool, and a skill cannot change them. Keep "ask before acting" on, and read what an agent plans to do before you say yes.

Questions

Before you download.

Short answers, as of 16 Oct 2026.

Is it really free?

Yes. Every skill here is a free download, with nothing to pay and nothing to sign up for. Use it as much as you like, change it to fit your team, and share unchanged copies with anyone, with the credit and the date. What you may not do is sell it, put it inside something you sell, or publish a changed version outside your own organisation, team, class or group.

Which assistants and plans does it work with?

Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini, all with the same SKILL.md file. The vendors' own pages say: Claude on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise (its plans table also ticks Free), with code execution on; ChatGPT as a beta on Free and Plus, and on Enterprise and Edu; Gemini on personal Google Accounts, 18 or over, with work and school accounts "soon". Skills you add in Claude also follow you into Claude Code.

On any other plan, paste the plain-text copy into a project's instructions or at the start of a chat. Each skill's setup guide says how it was tested, and when.

Which tool should I run a skill in?

Each skill says which tool, mode and model fits its job. My recommendation is Claude first, ChatGPT second, Gemini third, and where another tool is the better fit, the skill says so: for example Gemini when your meetings are in Google Meet, or ChatGPT Work for a job that must start when an email arrives.

One rule comes first: for company data, use the tool your company approves, on your work account.

Do I need a connector or MCP?

No. Every skill here works on what you paste or attach. A connector is a signed-in link from your AI to another app, and MCP is the shared standard those links are built on. Add one only when a job needs live data from that app, start with read-only access, and keep approvals on.

Can my whole team use it?

Yes. The free licence covers use in any organisation, and you may adapt a skill to your team's rules and hand that version around inside your organisation, saying it was changed. Ask whoever runs your company's Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini account to add it for your staff. Each tool has its own admin settings, and on Team and Enterprise plans an owner often has to allow things first.

What happens when the tools change?

They change most months, so every skill carries an "as of" date, and its setup guide names the vendor pages it was checked against. If a menu on your screen differs, the vendor's help page wins.

Does a skill see or send my files?
